When I was running my brand strategy company, I found the cliche “your tribe is rarely your family,” to be true. Typically, your biological family are not your best customers. You find your tribe in like-minded individuals who are looking, not necessarily for a new family, but instead are hoping to be understood and seen. They’re looking for community. Oddly, most families do not provide a true sense of self. One finds that outside of family. “Family,” is an illustration of the awkwardness of being a part of a biological unit that one may love, and at the same time, one may feel distinct from. Family may or may not be your tribe, yet you are connected both emotionally and biologically to each other. You may feel outside, but you are genetically inside of this innately human, yet involuntary, unit.
