Every piece in this original art series is a whimsical and intuitive expression of hiding places from the storms of life, particularly in childhood, some physical and others emotional. The colors, shapes and textures were combined to offer healing validation on both a physical and emotional level; a balm of peace and quiet to wrap oneself in.
“Fort Of Solitude,” is both a metaphor and a real place, a reminder that one should not contort themselves to please or to protect. When I was young, I felt it my duty to protect the defenseless. I would find any and every way to wrap myself around the weak, the scared, the abandoned, and the bullied. When I was helping others, I wasn’t afraid. Despite my desire to free and support others, my own need for protection was never satisfied. I built places of refuge, but couldn’t find peace within or without. It was when I realized the only refuge was within, but to find and cultivate that peace, I would need sacred solitude. No one else belongs in your thoughts. Just you and love should live there.
